Fast Food: It’s Fast, But is it Really Food?

Have you ever really taken a close look at a Chicken McNugget? Do you know what it really is? I’m not sure anyone really can say. But I’m going to try.

A McNugget is only 50% “chicken” – loosely defined when you consider it’s comprised of pulverized chicken skins and mechanically reclaimed meat, harvested from a processing plant where the chickens have been injected with hormones and raised in cages and don’t even really resemble anything close to a real, live, natural, normal chicken.

So, that’s the chicken part. The other 50% of the nugget is – well – here’s the ingredient list, from the McDonald’s website itself:

Ingredients: White Boneless Chicken, Water, Food Starch-Modified, Salt, Seasoning (Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Salt, Wheat Starch, Natural Flavoring [Botanical Source], Safflower Oil, Dextrose, Citric Acid), Sodium Phosphates, Natural Flavor (Botanical Source). Battered and Breaded with: Water, Enriched Flour (Bleached Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Yellow Corn Flour, Bleached Wheat Flour, Food Starch-Modified, Salt, Leavening (Baking Soda, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Monocalcium Phosphate, Calcium Lactate), Spices, Wheat Starch, Dextrose, Corn Starch.

A few questions come to mind – such as, what in the heck are most of these ingredients? Is it supposed to be food? Research on your own some of these ingredients that are difficult to pronounce and you will be surprised as to what you will find out!

chicken_mcnuggets_9pcs_800x596_0Every day, 64 million people eat at McDonald’s. 64 million. Every day. It’s hard to say how many of them order this particular foodstuff, but then, it’s not like the rest of the menu carries the healthy options.

There are no healthy options on the menu. It’s all processed stuff that tries to pass for food, laden with chemicals that no sane human being would consciously put in their bodies or the bodies of the ones they love if they really knew what they were consuming. And yet, 64 million of us do it, every day.

Fast Food, for some people, are an addiction not unlike cigarettes, heroin, or cocaine. So many efforts over the years have worked with some success to get people to quit smoking. The new campaign includes disturbing photographs on cigarette packs of people who bear the consequences of making that particular choice. The point is, to paraphrase one tobacco executive, “to arouse disgust and revulsion for picking up cigarettes.”

I wonder if a similar tactic applied to fast food chains would bring about the same result. There should be more outrage about how our society has been schemed into believing this is food. Problem is, the Big Food industry has more power and influence than Big Tobacco ever did. It won’t ever happen.

You need to know what’s in the things you put in your mouth. Fast food is simply disgusting. It’s 90% fake food, and the few things on the menu that are real food certainly aren’t healthy and have no place in anyone’s healthy eating plan, no matter what some nutritionists have been paid to claim about fast food restaurants. Eating fast food simply puts you on the fast track to possibilities of disease and decay.

It’s simple to walk away from that fast track. If You Cannot Pronounce, Don’t Eat It.

There is good news though! Chipotle was the first national restaurant company to disclose the GMO ingredients in their food, and they are the first to cook only with non-GMO ingredients. Have you ever been to a Chipotle? It is always super busy, prices are reasonable and you are eating good clean food.
