The LGBT network stands up for equality

In February, the Trump Administration began its attack on the LGBT community by rescinding an Obama administration policy that any school that receives federal money must treat a student’s gender identity as his or her sex. This meant that transgender students were protected under Title IX, the statute that prohibits discrimination on the basis of
sex. Trump has put these protections in jeopardy, leaving transgender students open to discriminatory and dangerous interpretations of Title IX.

Within hours of the announcement, the LGBT Network mobilized a response, holding a press conference denouncing the move as deplorable and dangerous. The LGBT Network featured the voices and faces of our community who were heard and seen around the globe, as the story was released in major news outlets in over 50 nations and translated into numerous languages. Transgender youth and their parents shared stories of harassment, stigma, discrimination and fear, and why these protections are critical and necessary.

The LGBT Network has also set-up a new 24/7 hotline for transgender and other youth to report harassment and discrimination. In addition, the Network has begun assembling a team of attorneys to vigorously investigate and litigate any instances of discrimination. The hotline can be reached at 646-535-4528.
